Here are some key questions to ask about when connecting and there's of course a catchy abbreviation too... F.O.R.M.
1.) Family (How's the family? Married? Children in school?)
2.) Occupation (What do you do for a living? How long have you been a nurse? Really! You must really like it, or not.. The point here is to always be making mental notes.)
3.) Recreation (What have you undertaken for fun lately? Most people complain that they don't have the time or money.)
4.) Motivation (What's your interest? What do you want in life? At that point if the opportunity presents itself you could ask.. What would you be doing right now if you could do anything you would like to?)
In my experience, people will open up if you're truly listening. If they don't, congratulate yourself for having a truly unselfish conversation, thank them and say goodbye. The next time you see them they will be happy to see you since the last time you talked, the conversation was all about them!
